Coil - Backwards (Cold Spring)

"Wise words from departing. Eat your greens, especially Broccoli. Remember to say "thank you", for things yo never had. By working the soil, we cultivate the sky... The death of your father, the death of your mother is something you prepare for... All of your life."  Coil - Broccoli
Coil is not your average band, it is not something you love and try to collect all the records and everything connected to the project. Coil is not popular band, instead it has all those people who are fascinated with their art. Coil is not the cult, Coil is something that you are living with it - inside your soul.

Coil is the art project, emerged from the ashes of Throbbing Gristle, it is the part of clique gathered around ideas and art that started with TG, but with advanced technological possibilities to dive even further into new-new age philosophy, new art directions, spiritualism, explorations in sexual freedoms, and of course out-there limits of art in capitalistic material world. People gathered in that clique, have been often called a pioneers in industrial and electronic music, with theirs projects like: Psychic TV, Nurse With Wound, NON aka Douglas McCarthy, Current 93, Death In June, Chris&Cosey (latest project Carter Tutti Void), Thighpaulsandra and others, for poor me, obscure projects. And all of those people exchange their ideas and often collaborate with each others - creating certain visual image, that sometimes is misunderstood. For instance Coil described their music as: "Ritual music for the accumulation of male sexual energy."

So far with the Coil, I consider myself a huge fan of their work, and aware of every stage of their development and experimentation. But for those of you who are not introduce with them, you will find that is very hard to find, buy, and collect all of their material - official and bootleg material. It's because they operated without major distributors and labels. I encourage you to go out and discover more for yourself, prepare your money savings and dive into the strangely beautiful world of Coil and other mentioned projects. Trivia: do you know that Coil made entirely soundtrack for Clive Barker's Hellraiser. Yes that one with cenobites, but soundtrack was canceled.

Sad thing is that: Coil doesn't exist anymore: both original and core members are dead now: John Balance, real name Geoffrey Laurence Burton (16.2.1962 - 13.11.2004), and Peter Sleazy Christopherson (27.2.1955 - 25.11.2010), but their legacy still lives on, and their is no way of stopping it. The are certain people who have legal rights and other living members are eager to release all of their unreleased material. Their is too many hungry ears that can't wait to hear those lost tapes, so only we can do is wait for something new to be released.

Well Backwards is one of the "lost albums". Recorded in New Orleans, with producer genius Trent Reznor (Nine Inch Nails, How to Destroy Angels - trivia: How To Destroy Angels, Reznor's projects is named after Coil's first ever released EP, so that makes him Coil fanatic like us). They entered the studio just after they finished their masterpiece Love's Secret Domain, they didn't polish and post produced album (for me reason are unknown), but after that, starts a new phase in their career, they have released one of most famous albums till this date Musick to Listen in the Dark Vol I ( and later Vol II.). So music-wise Backwards is some kind of connection between those two musical phases. As I said true fans know the difference between harsh beauty and rhythmical Love's Secret Domain album, and mystical and slowly, dark-in-the-woods Musick I and II albums.
Backwards contains almost same tracks as last official Coil album The New Backwards, but only as early versions, demo-like, but they contain certain power and rawness. Also there are some tracks from other compilations, but in different versions.

It would be easy to say  "hey there is nothing new", but it is essential to see how Coil's art changes, and why are there such a radical shifts in the albums and shows diversity in their work, cause 20 years has pass. Also, if you go deep with the Coil discography to really understand psychological change into authors vision of certain piece of art.
And one more thing. This is not part of official studio albums discography. As we saw, both of core members are not with us, but there is a body of work, and with pleasure we will go and dig it, and trying to connect the dots and mystery behind phenomenon that is Coil. Yes there are better LPs and releases, but this one is another chapter, and there are conformations that there will be more music from the vault. Can't wait.
Coil is like the gnostic book of alchemy with hyper-text, that can be read from backwards, from beginning, even up-side down, then there is codes in the text, codes in the pages, codes in pictures. That's sounds like serious fun, but real Coil fan is not having fun. He is learning and seeks for... something.

So the question is: is it worth the money? Well if you consider yourself a Coil-ist,  there is no doubt - get it! But if you are beginner, you can easily go to Love Secret Domain, Horse Rotorvator, or even Scatology, and don't forget . But if have heard of Coil, then there is perfect compilation: A Guide For Beginners: Silver Voice, and A Guide For Finishers: Golden Hair compilation, for me it's some kind of "greatest hits." (somewhere you can find it as one release under the name: The Golden Hair With Golden Voice).

Thighpaulsandra - Golden Communion (Editions Mego)

When you read Tim Thighpaulsandra Lewis's musical Curriculum Vitae you will notice huge body of work as a artist. Pretty big part of that corpus is mostly gathered around collaborations with Julian Cope, Spiritualized, but mostly working with the black Sun band that is known as Coil. Collaboration with Coil that still resonate to this day, actually spreads from Astral Disaster, both volumes of Musick to Listen in the Dark, also live releases like Queens of Circulation Library and Constant Shallowness leads to Evil, Selvaggina, and most experimental Coil's album Time Machines. Highly praised for his synthesizers and keyboards, a multi-instrumentalist with significant roles in other people's albums and projects. Also his solo career with bravery  released 10 albums (including this one on review), stylishly ranged from Industrial, Electronic, Neo Folk, with the topics on homo-eroticism, alchemy and religion, witch crafting, forgotten magic rituals, new age esotheria, ecology, human corruption and human condition... did I mention search for inner-self.

The new album The Golden Communion was released on cult label Editions Mego who are famous for releasing albums as pure art forms - from cover to music itself. And they hit the moment, cause in the same month, in-between couple weeks, when Coil - Backwards and Carter Tutti Void - f(x) are released. So we now  we have three albums different albums with artistic vision, that came from the same source. Actually all up mentioned artists used to work together, so there is certain aesthetics. Also we all wait for another album from ex-Coil member Drew McDonald's Collapse album, so that's another treat.

The Golden Communion, as Thighpaulsandra said, some songs were maid a couple years ago, with different structures, but left behind in some of his "folders". The Golden Communion is collection of proggy rock feelings (" I love electric guitar, why should I play just electronic stuff") and long drone and kosmische tracks. So if we look the album as coherent story it's easy to imagine modern rock/electronic opera, Tommy-like. Ok I'm just kidding about Tommy, but there is for sure underline, a concept, a story to tell, in this album.

Salute is slowly builder, that explode in your face, and sounds perfect as a opener. Especially with all those distorted guitars and synths. Did He Fall is breakbeat-ish rock hit, it could be easily played on the radio during day time. My favorite track is The Foot Garden with melancholic and gothic chorus, about loosing somebody we love. I still feel goosebumps when I hear it. A Devil in every Hedgerow has small intro (like in opera), with strong and powerful female vocal, and then goes through dark forest-like sounds, and then ends like requiem with Thighpaulsandra on piano by himself, with fatal and tragic song text. Songs Misery and Valery have similar approach, they start with certain atmosphere, and then in the middle everything turns up-side-down, and final parts of the song are something different. I didn't made any wrong impression when I said it is kind of opera inspired music. The Sinking Stone is pure darkwave/industrial/ambient track with a lot of noise. But for me, best tracks are, over 20 minutes long: The Golden Communion, and  The More I Know Men, The Better I like Dogs, which are semi-instrumentals, perfect for dark rooms and self questioning. Or riff heavy On The Register with that powerful riff, with low downed verses.

All in all Thighpaulsandra made strong and powerful album which combines rock/industrial metal with atmospheric "practical magik" slower experimental tracks. Someone wouldn't like crossing the genres, but it is perfect on the long run, not in the sprint. Just sit, make some coffee, tea or red wine, and just let yourself in the magical world that Thighpaulsandra made for You.

Mixes of the Week(s)

Comic was taken from: http://existentialcomics.com/

So here we are. to celebrate music in form (and structure) of mixes. From trippy&droney, to straight straight-to-the-point-in-the-heart of dancefloor fillers.

SeekSickSounds Podcast 176: Inner8

Inner8 is Daniele Antezza, one half of magical post-production and sound engineering duo, and of course artists behind highly praised duo Dadub - all that with partener-in-crime Giovani Conti. People who own Artifacts Mastering Studio, and they stand behind all those releases on Stroboscopic Artifacts label. Including their own Dadub album You Are Eternity - which is one of my favorite Techno album. I wrote about it here, but it was writen in Serbo-Croat language.
Anyway Inner8 delivers highly emotional and dark (not bleak) mix for SeekSickSound, perfect for late-night excursions into inner-self. And let me add this: first I listen it on headphones and felt strange stereo, or 3D effects. But on 5.1 speakers it made all the sense. And Inner8's genius programming of the mix.

.temp - Emergence from the Self

.temp - Emergence from the Self
by Goran Sipka on Mixcloud

.temp is a hero of our latest in the Don't Care About Podcast 004 series. this was his first mix, at it was the reason We approach him to do podcast specially for us. It's easy to see/hear why we decide to do it.

KDVS 90.3 Guest mix: Madteo

.temp is a hero from our latest mix in Don't Care About The Podcast 004 series. This was his first mix, and the reason why we approach him to do podcast, specially for us.

KDVS 90.3 - Guest Mix: MADTEO

I have only words of LOVE for Madteo. First he is great producer and a DJ, who can blend all kind of styles. Secondfind all mixes from Madteo and you will know what I mean...  You won't be disappointed, it's the flea market of sounds and styles. Please do that!!! Third thing, he is the guy who will, in most gentle way communicate with you. At least I had nice time talking to him via social networks.
this mix is what-is-doing-and-how-he pull-that-out-where-did-he-get-those-records moment.

Slam Radio 158: Efdemin

From Berlin to rural Japan, from Berghain dungeons to small intimate public-toilet-turned-into-the-club. From electro-acoustics to hypnotic deep house. From Dial to Ostgut Ton. One of my favorite online/podcast mixes, that we all get for free, I consider his XLR8ER podcast as his finest moment. I was burning in my head and thought that my hair will get on fire. But this one for Slam Radio podcast is also another emotional rollercoaster through the tunnel visions. Just let yourself to submerge.

Ben UFO - Live @ Factory, Osaka

Ben UFO mission is to find all those obscure records, and then make them in potential dancefloor destroyers. Also Ben UFO is one of those guys that destroy the lines between genres and styles with unmatched mixing abilities. I know, cause I'm allergic to bad mixing (but who isn't).
One more little thing, he was also one of those people who started to mix dubstep and techno with his Hessle Audio crew (Pangea, Pearson Sound), and alongside people like 2526, Scuba, Joy Orbison, Peverelist, etc., they gave both genres new dimension and new flavor.

Mein Hertz brennt, and I feel proud:
Filip Alvir Live @ Studio Zumbul

Filip Alvir is my man. I love him like my brother. We spend so much time together, share the same stage behind the decks, in the past. Also he has continue to DJ. His mixing technique was (screaming) common-give-me-one-more-turntable. Fast and furious, take-no-prisoners three decks wizardry.
But this one shows Filip Alvir with his more relaxed (mature?) style of mixing, where he elegantly, let the tracks speak for itself first, and then he mix it with another - like they sing in the in chorus. A truly Gentleman with capitol G.

Carter Tutti Void - f (x) (Industrial Records)

This Summer/Fall fans and radicals, who worship the work and art of Wreckers of Civilisation and people and projects formed around Throbbing Gristle and Industrial Records can truly be satisfied. This Fall we have new Thigpaulsandra album The Golden Communion. The there's Coil's Backwards which is never released (potentially) album from around Love's Secret Domain period, which contains songs released on compilations and some new tracks and demo versions. And there is this: Carter Tutti Void with f (x), which follows their Transverse album. And yes I will review those two albums on this blog - right after this. So stay tuned.

I would love to skip all those must biography thing, but I must write this. Chris Carter and Cosey Fanni Tutti were original members of Throbbing Gristle, and after it's termination, they went on with their own project Chris & Cosey. Theirs career and discography is still incredible!!! Always ahead with their minds beyond (and before) rest of the the world (not one step, but kilometers ahead) in their music. Independent and on controls, they steer their own career and making new paths for others - who can only follow them. Chris & Cosey are everywhere, not just as proto-techno musical prophets, but also in every kind of imaginable arts. Pushing the boundaries is just a bad mild phrase to describe it.

Carter Tutti Void is their collaboration project with Nik Colk Void from band Factory Floor, and this is their second album. First one was Transverse, which one was produced and played live on Short Circuit show, and later release for Mute Records.

f (x) is sound of haunting mathematical processes, ghoul-y arithmetic and damned equations. With their music, Carter Tutti Void embodied abstract mathematical ideas. At least, their hard-to-categorize techno/industrial/noise/electronica could easy make you fantasize about shapes and objects from the other side, from unmaterial reality. And also it's produced so clinical clean, without sharp edged sounds, even if it is improvised you can sense certain clearness in music.
One of those albums that just won't leave you alone, you simply want to put it on repeat, and yes f (x) beats a lot of new quality pure techno records. I'm not saying that cause "oh that's Carter Tutti Void, they are so...". No. It does sounds fresh and excites your mind and body, also you can dance if you feel like it is thing to do.

One more thing, pretty trivial and subjective!!! I guess everyone has their own couple, people who are in love, in relationship - from show business or pop culture. For example Sid and Nancy, Cher and Sonny, etc...
They are mine. I hate to write this but they are prime example how two individuals can work together in  everyday life. I don't know if they are a couple, that's just not a thing to think about it. But I wish they are. Simple. And suddenly started to think that this are love songs. Maybe they are. Equations of love.

More on Carter & Cosey here and Carter Tutti Void interview about the project here.

Darth Vutrax - Intergalactic or No Galactic At All (KRV produkcija)

Darth Vutrax je koncept smješten između Star Wars univerzuma, viteške mitologije i istorije, čak i elemenata Bowie-ovog Man Who Fell On Earth, a poseban dio bi zauzeo Sun Ra-ov Space Is The Place.

Žanrovski album u sebi ima neo klasicizma sa gotičkim elementima i dark ambienta (The Return of The Intergalactic Scourge), free jazz improvizacija (The Third Host of Urghalis), drone metal pasaža (Through the Warp Gate i Thunderer), kosmische proggy/kraut (Space and Time Disturbances) i zaista impresivnih ethno i folk numera (Intermission at Ord Zbajjj i The Clash of Frulsabers).

The Force is Strong with this One!!!

Don't Care About Podcast 004: .temp - Suspendo Vir

O Momento mori.

(English version)

O Momento Mori. .temp is unidentified, temporary (.temp - in IT technical wordbooks means special data file where OS collects mostly "downloaded" or from other media gathered files) project who's intention, or statement is to remind us all on passage of time, our hyper-reality. In the form of DJ mix .temp wants our attention to be focused, to stop for the moment, and to feel and listen that moment. Actually, in this post-postmodern times,  we have lost ability to focus on the moment, right exact the moment. Here are the words from the .temp himself::
"Suspendo Vir (lat.) is Hanged Man tarot card. The symbolism behind Hangman stands for one is out of control of things, he is helpless, tangled. His circumstances or doubt about himself lead it to that situation: where he is tied-up and turned upside-down. There are conclusions to this situation: or he will fall, or he will break free. But in these moment he can't do anything, so he have to accept the situation and be patient, to figure out how and become aware of  possibilities and knowledge. That is why there is so much mania in the mix itself, he is in the dark, his perception of world is turned upside-down. So we can only know one thing for sure: we don't know what will happen, there is suspension, just like the end of the mix."
Also .temp said one more thing: "That's what I wanted to show with my mix, that moment situation. That's why mix is unconventional, with full range of styles and energies, and moods, of course. And what about me you asked? Well I'm temporary. Music is all that matters.

V.A. - No.I. (No-Ware)

“Work on a good piece of writing proceeds on three levels: a musical one, where it is composed; an architectural one, where it is constructed; and finally, a textile one, where it is woven.”
Walter Benjamin

First of all, I know this is released in May 2015, and I got it for a couple of months already. No, it's not because I'm writing this down from Bosnia, Balkans. One might think that things come here late or they don't come at all. Hey we're part of Europe, at least geographically. That was funny introduction.
I wanted to come to this slowly, to dive-in, to give myself some time with it. I was trying to be easy-going, to enjoy it, to listen it, so it might settle down. Like a good meal, for example. I wondered would it stand the test of time. Also I didn't want to tell anyone about it, I wanted just to be mine.

No Ware is a German label, owned by Uwe Schmidt and Material Object, and it is based on ambient and  techno releases. It is easy to connect music with visual identity of the label. Simple triangle in the middle, and abstract picture behind it. It gives perfect identity to the label and the music. So music on those releases can be perceived like that. Simple programmed sound structure based on drone/loop. With  simple overdubbed tones, melodies, and half-harmonies that lay down on basis. Music is dreamy, soft, light, atmospheric, harmonized.

No. I. is mixed compilation of released and unreleased tracks from label. Tracks were specially re-made, re-looped so it could have effective flow. Tracks were produced in the way so it could have sense of cohesiveness. Like a living organism that's grown and expand, and in one point becoming rational and self-aware. You won't have sense of dream logic, spontaneous happening of things. It have his objective and every part have his role, it's systematic, logic and mix have straight-forward lineage. It isn't impulsive, it have certain rules and passage.
On the other hand, it is not hermetic and closed in those rules. It gives you freedom to create your own vision and sensibility of it. Mix will guide you, but it will give you possibility of your own growth and stream of your consciousness. It wouldn't give you steering wheel and gear shift stick, but you could choose the paths, motorways and freeways, or shortcuts and even off-roads.

It is an ambient music, but with clarity and structures and forms. I have no problems with a lot new music that almost got no forms, just like gas. No. I.  isn't that kind of music. Yes you are free and you will be free, but music has to have patterns and textures, the sense of something solid.

Intelligent music for intelligent people, who have time, but you wouldn't need to train your attention span. And that is something.
